Flash Photography
Most digital cameras come with a built-in flash. Basic flash modes should include automatic, on, and off. Some digital cameras include other features, such as red-eye reduction or night portrait mode. Red-eye reduction is ideal for portrait photography. It fires a series of short flashes before the final flash and exposure. This causes your subjects' pupils to contract and prevents glowing red eyes in the photo. Night portrait mode sets your flash to go off at the beginning or end of a long exposure, allowing you to take portrait shots against a night setting. However, you need something steady to set the camera on, like a tripod.
TV Viewing
A useful digital camera feature video-output terminal. You can display your pictures on a TV or projector. With some digital cameras you can manually advance the pictures, or the camera will automatically cycle through the saved photos. You can also copy your pictures onto a VHS tape.
Interface
Whether you download images directly from your digital camera to the computer or use an external card reader, the type of interface is important. The majority of digital cameras are supplied with cables that plug into a USB port. Card readers and adapters can also plug into the parallel port, SCSI port or the PC Card slot which tends to be quicker than downloading directly from the camera. If you want maximum download speed choose digital cameras and card readers that support FireWire. This type of cable is similar to USB but provides even faster data transfer but it's rather expensive.
Digital Photo Software
The basic software that comes with a digital camera allows you to download images from the camera to your computer. Depending on the program, you can view thumbnail pictures first and then decide which pictures you want to download in their entirety. Higher quality software also includes image-editing features. The programs you get are often limited so you might want to upgrade to a full-featured program like Adobe Photo Deluxe.
Color Photo Printing
If you want to print your photos you will need a color printer with photo-quality printing cababilities. Inexpensive inkjet printers starting around $200 should produce fairly good color prints. You'll get even better quality if you use glossy printing paper and high quality photgraphic color inkjet cartridges. Some printers also have slots for SmartMedia or CompactFlash cards which let you print without a PC.
